About Dr. Robert Nay Ph.D.

W. Robert Nay, PhD. is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in McLean, Virginia and Annapolis, Maryland where he lives with his wife, Joyce. He has been on the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Illinois and most recently serves as Clinical Associate Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Having written two previous textbooks: Behavioral Intervention: Contemporary Strategies and Multimethod Clinical Assessment to train mental health professionals, he has also written numerous invited book chapters and articles in professional journals and has served as Associate Editor of the academic journal Behavior Therapy.

Dr. Nay has trained thousands of mental health professionals throughout the country to treat communication and conflict problems in marital/couples, parental and work relationships where anger/aggression has flared up. He recently completed a successful two week book tour and training in five major cities in Australia. He works with a variety of relationship issues including parenting and behavioral problems of children and teens, marriage and couples issues, and emotional disorders of all ages from a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) framework. CBT interventions focus on teaching skills so that clients learn to identify and alter dysfunctional thinking patterns that fuel anxiety, anger and depression and sustain unhealthy behaviors. New behaviors are taught to replace old, ineffective actions so that measurable change occurs in a relatively brief period of time.

He has spoken nationally for the American Healthcare Institute and Premier Educational Systems and to universities and public and private agencies. He has appeared multiple times on Entertainment Tonight to discuss media violence, on the Arts and Entertainment Network, on CNN-FN, interviewed on Geraldo At Large (Fox News Network – primetime), on the Derek McGinty Show on CBS, Washington, for the Associated Press radio network, as an expert on WEB-MD and for Child Magazine’s Child.com and has been interviewed by ABC News, MSNBC.com, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Natural Health, The Washington Post, The New York Post and many other news, radio and television outlets. He writes a nationally published Relationship blog for the magazine Psychology Today

His first self-help book Taking Charge of Anger: How to Resolve Conflict, Sustain Relationships, and Express Yourself without Losing Control (Guilford Press, 2004) has been a top seller and the second edition was published in 2012, Overcoming Anger in Your Relationship: How to Break the Cycle of Arguments, Put-Downs, and Stony Silences, which addresses partners of angry individuals as was published by Guilford Press in 2010. Dr. Nay’s new workbook on anger and relationships will be published by Guilford Press in 2014.

Personal Coaching is also offered as an alternative to psychotherapy to address any of the above areas of interest.
