What to expect
BRIEF PHONE CONVERSATION
Prior to scheduling an initial session, it is often helpful to have a brief phone conversation to discuss the reasons you are seeking services and to determine the issues/services being sought. This consultation is free of charge to you and provides an opportunity for you to ask questions about our services.
INITIAL MARRIAGE COUNSELING SESSION
The initial session is typically scheduled for 50-100 minutes and when you arrive, you will be asked to fill out some paperwork which will further inform your therapist about your specific issues and needs. This session will include a discussion of confidentiality, practice policies, and answering any questions you may have. We will also focus on gathering pertinent background information, including some medical, mental health, and family history during this initial session. We will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy and develop treatment goals for our work together. If time permits and a double session is engaged, we will contract for specific issues and desired outcomes both individually and as a couple and introduce an initial communication technique that will aid in more effectively communicating your desires and needs to your partner.
FOLLOW-ON SESSIONS
An individual session will be scheduled for each of you and thereafter you will both come together to begin the work of rebuilding and strengthening your relationship to achieve the objectives you both have outlined and contracted for in your initial session. Any individual needs will be assessed and referrals will be made as appropriate.
A MARITAL VISION STATEMENT
Couples are encouraged to create “A Vision Statement” of what you want your relationship to reflect—I want to feel..., I need.... We need to know where we have been to effectively determine what needs to be changed/rectified, and your therapist will help you create a “Vision Statement” for your relationship uniquely crafted to meet your needs and objectives.
